I went down the list of fixes - and #6 worked!! (Banging it around a bit). The SD1000 is a nice camera at a nice price. Sonny DSC-W55:lens gets stuck occasionally on start-up. This is my second Canon and I'm pretty sure the camera had its *ahem* error when the user was falling off a chair, so I don't think it's actually e18 related.
